This Krotoku Saa Mobea Porcupine Ring originated in Ghana. The art symbolizes the porcupine of the Asante region. The porcupine is seen as an invincible warrior, like the crocodile. The Asante says that it can shoot its spines at an enemy and generate new spines to continue the battle. The saying associated with the porcupine is, “If you kill a thousand, a thousand will come.” This expression is particularly appropriate when one considers that the Asante had an estimated 40,000 musket armed soldiers in its army during the 19th century. During present day, it is equally significant that the major soccer team of the Asante heartland is Asante Kotoko (“Porcupines”).
