The month of February usually highlights the events of prominent people of color who contributed to the culture of America today. In my opinion, our ancestors are more than worthy of recognition for their innate skills and talents that were overlooked during their lifetime; skills and talents that contributed to a long list of categories: music, art, science, labor, literature, sports, legacy media, law, military positions, and so much more. Unfortunately, the education system tends to highlight our history as submissive slaves opposed to being informative scholars. This leads us to do our own research, in order to access and learn our true history. Before slavery we were kings and queens; “… a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, [God’s] own special people (1 Peter 2:9) and we still hold those prestigious titles today.
It’s uplifting to see a group of confident Black women embracing the beauty of their skin as one union. There was a point and time in history, when women of color were ashamed of their dark skin. Women who passed the “paper bag test” were held superior over those with darker hues. I also remember watching School Daze (1988) as a young girl and realizing that I wanted to be a part of the Delta Sorority, because their skin looked like mine. Those women were confident in their skin and embraced their natural beauty. But influences like that can either be harmful (it causes division and envy) or edifying (it allows us to learn from our mistakes and create improvements) to our race as a Black community. We truly need to continue supporting and uplifting one another every day, every month, and every year; utilizing every opportunity to uplift our community without any limitations.
We were invited to participate in a wonderful photoshoot showing off the beauty of melanin in a truly iconic Black History Photoshoot with photographer Ben of @fotosbyben, videographer Ikemefula of @ikemefula, stylist Ijeoma of @styledbygothikah
